A Long Awaited Update

Alright guys,
Like I promised, here’s what I found out regarding the entry that Janice posted on November 10th 2004.

Just to re-cap, these are the verses that were quoted:

Mal 1:3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

Pro 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him

In these 2 passages, the word ‘hate’ comes from the same Hebrew word, pronounced as ‘saw-nay’, which means to treat as an enemy, or a foe.

Rom 9:13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

In Romans 9:13, the Greek word for ‘hate’ is pronounced as ‘mis-eh-o’ which just simply means ‘to love less’.

The Bible commentary I read says “the verb hate must not be defined as an expression of the wrath of God. God’s love for Jacob was so great that in comparison, His actions towards Esau looked like hatred. Esau should have inherited both the blessing and the birthright, but the Lord gave them to his younger brother Jacob (Genesis 25:21-33). The descendents of Esau had their land assigned to them, but God gave the Edomites no covenants of blessing as He did to Jacob’s descendents. When Jesus called His disciples to ‘hate’ their own family (Luke 14:26), He was using the word ‘hate’ in a similar way. Our love for Christ may occasionally move us to do things that appear like hatred to those whom we love.”

Yups, that’s all I have for now. Hopefully some of you guys have also done some ‘research’ to find out what those verses meant. Thanks Jan for that post, it was thought stimulating.
